The 3D commerce playbook for 2027

Where 3D and AR actually help shoppers, how to roll it out across a catalog without a 3D team, and what to measure.

Online shoppers can't pick a product up. They can't feel its weight, turn it over or see how big it really is. Interactive 3D and AR close a surprising amount of that gap, but only when they are used in the right places. Here is what we have learned building our commerce tools.

Where 3D earns its place

Not every product benefits equally. The biggest wins come from categories where shape, scale or detail drives the decision:

  • Furniture and home decor: "will it fit?" is the number one question, and AR answers it.
  • Footwear and accessories: shoppers want to see the sole, the heel and the back.
  • Consumer electronics: ports, buttons and proportions matter.
  • Configurable products: colorways and materials are easier to understand in 3D than in a grid of photos.

Rolling out across a catalog

The old way to get 3D models was to ship products to a scanning studio or hire modelers at a few hundred dollars per SKU. That works for twenty hero products, not for two thousand. Here is the rollout plan we recommend.

Start with your top 50

Pick the products with the most traffic and the highest return rates. Generate models from your existing product photography using image to 3D, review them, and publish. This is where you will learn the most, fastest.

Automate the long tail

Once you trust the output, connect your catalog. New products get a 3D model automatically when they are created, and a reviewer approves them in a queue.

Use variants, not duplicates

Generate one base model and add colorways as material variants. They share geometry, load once and switch instantly in the viewer.

Keep viewer files small. Aim for under 2 MB per product with compressed geometry and WebP or KTX2 textures. Dimensa's commerce export does this by default.

What to measure

3D is only worth it if it changes behavior. Track these from day one and compare against products without 3D:

  1. Interaction rate: the share of visitors who rotate or zoom the model.
  2. AR launches: especially on mobile, where it is one tap away.
  3. Add to cart rate for sessions with and without 3D interaction.
  4. Return rate for "not as expected" reasons over the following 60 days.

Dimensa's viewer reports the first two automatically and can send events to your analytics stack for the rest.

Try it yourself

You can play with a live, variant enabled product viewer on our platform page, or browse the showcase and tap "View in your space" on a phone. If you run a store and want early access, tell us about your catalog.
